A Vintage Achievement: Tindal Wine Merchants Becomes Ireland’s First B Corp™ Certified Wine Merchant
This May we received a very exciting and long anticipated email. The first line read ‘We’re so delighted to officially welcome Tindal Wine Merchants to the Irish BCorpTM community!’
A BCorp business is one that aims to benefit people, communities and the planet, not just shareholders. The “B” stands for Benefit, reflecting a commitment to creating a positive impact on society and the environment while still operating as a for-profit entity.
It has been a long and arduous journey involving all members of the Tindal Wine Merchant team, as well as many of our suppliers and customers. And we are only at the beginning of our sustainability journey.
Three years ago, MD William Tindal daringly announced his wish to make Tindal Wine Merchants a BCorp Certified company. This certification is seen as the highest standard of ESG qualification for businesses globally. It goes above and beyond to assess the welfare of the company’s workers, employees, customers, environment and its overall governance; to categorically not be a green washing exercise.
This attitude of transparency and accountability aligns with Tindal Wine Merchants aims and values, so we went for it. We have learnt a lot. With the guidance of Blab Ireland (BCorp’s team in Ireland) we have put in place many new structures and systems, however we also have many plans for the future.
As part of the certification, we have legally embedded consideration of all stakeholders into our governance structure, ensuring that decisions made by the business take into account employees, customers, suppliers, communities and the environment alongside shareholders. We will continue to develop our sustainability strategy through numerous innovations including ongoing environmental improvements, enhanced supplier collaboration and transparent impact reporting.
As the companies Sustainability Manager, I’m excited for the future of Tindal Wine Merchants and the positivity we can bring to the industry. As it states in the BCorp Declaration of Interdependence that, all of our employees have now signed their names to, ‘…we must be the change we seek in the world.’
