Villa Antinori

Villa Antinori

Villa Rossa was first produced in 1928 by Marquis Niccolò Antinori, father of Piero, as the very first Chianti Classico intended to age and improve over time. In 2001, Piero Antinori inaugurated a new phase in the history of the wine, which then became a Tuscan IGT made from a selection of the finest grapes of the various Antinori family estates in Tuscany. The design of the label has remained unaltererd since 1928 with only the very slightest modifications in 1990 and in 2001.

It was 1928 when Niccolò Antinori decided to call this wine with the name of the family villa so that it represented his personal interpretation of the Chiantigian and Tuscan identity.

The historic Villa Antinori wine was chosen as the Official Supplier of the Ryder Cup 2023 in Rome, the most important golf competition in the world.“As a golfer, it is a source of great pride for me and my family to be a Ryder Cup partner for this important sporting event. The choice to accompany Ryder Cup with Villa Antinori, our most historic wine and symbol of Tuscan and quality, goes perfectly with the great history and prestige of the event. Created just a year later, both Villa Antinori and Ryder Cup have shared the same values and excellence for nearly 100 years.” Cit. Piero Antinori, Honorary President of Marchesi Antinori.

Viticulture

The winery overlooks the countryside from a terrace surrounded by vineyards planted with Chianti Classico’s most typical grape, Sangiovese, together with other varieties that were historically planted nearby: Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Malvasia Nera, and Mammolo. A small area is dedicated to international vines, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The winery was designed for gravity flow vinification and to guarantee ideal climatic conditions for wine production and aging by using completely natural elements. Marco Casamonti, Antinori nel Chianti Classico’s architect stated: “It is a sacred place of silence, a temple dedicated to the ancient rituals of winemaking, but at the same time it is a production facility that must meet specific quality standards.” Designed to have a low environmental impact and maximum energy savings, the winery is an unusual and fascinating structure. Practically invisible to the eye, the winery’s façade appears as two elegant horizontal cuts in the Tuscan landscape and its most spectacular feature is the impressive spiral staircase that connects the building’s three levels. The Antinori nel Chianti Classico winery is part of Toscana Wine Architecture, an association that unites unique and original wineries designed by famous contemporary architects.

Winemaking

During these years, in almost a century of history, Villa Antinori has represented and represents, through a contemporary style, the concept of house, of territory, of Tuscany. A wine born from a way of conceiving wine production: as experimentation and evolution on the one hand, as historical value on the other.
