Walnut Block

Walnut Block

Founded in 2005, Walnut Block is the vision of brothers, Clyde and Nigel Sowman with Clyde in managing the overall project and Nigel responsible for the development of the estate’s organically farmed vineyards. The first vines were planted in 1996 on the alluvial deposits of the renowned Wairau Valley in Marlborough where the combination of free draining soils, sunshine hours and temperate climate provide an excellent backdrop for the production of high quality, cool climate grapes that have both natural intense fruit flavours and refreshing acidity. For the whites, the Collectibles Sauvignon Blanc is fermented in stainless steel whilst the Nutcracker Sauvignon is made 70:30 tank and barrel and the Nutcracker Chardonnay is fermented and aged in 500 litre demi-muids. Open top fermenters are used for the reds with further ageing in French barriques, 9 months for the Collectibles and 12 months for the Nutcracker.

Passionately handcrafted Marlborough wines

Organically grown Marlborough wines that preserve and deliver the grapes’ full range of delicate flavours and aromas.

Marlborough’s oldest walnut tree towers majestically above the Sauvignon Blanc vines, providing a special historical focal point for the vineyard.

Walnut Block Wines is the vision of two brothers – Clyde and Nigel Sowman. In combining their experience in viticulture and the wine industry with their passion for and appreciation of fine wine, they have created a unique range of superbly crafted Marlborough wines.

A boutique winery, Walnut Block offers some of the best wine buys in New Zealand.

Viticulture

“Organic wine grapes allow the vineyard’s unique characters to be expressed due to less outside influences such as sprays and fertilizers. Depth of flavour and mouthfeel improves as the vines become more self sufficient and naturally balanced which also results in a wider nuance of complexity” Nigal Sowman, Viticulturist First planted in 1996 the Walnut Block vineyard lies in the world-renowned Wairau Valley in Marlborough. Marlborough’s unique winegrowing conditions reflect a combination of alluvial soils, deposited over thousands of years from an ancient river bed that flowed between the mountainous borders of this valley, the region’s high sunshine hours and the temperate New Zealand climate. Our decision to farm organically reflected our belief that we could grow grapes with a higher quality than those grown using conventional methods. As the vines have become more self-sufficient and naturally balanced we have seen a greater depth of flavour and improved mouthfeel in the wines. The vines themselves can adapt to seasonal variations, which result in consistently healthy, and well balanced grapes. Since 2002 Nigel Sowman, Walnut Block’s viticulturist, has studied and practised organics and has become a recognised authority on organic viticulture. Nigel is proud of the exceptional quality of fruit being produced using only organic practices.
