Tindall

Tindall

Lynley Sowman (née Tindall) reckons we are long lost cousins and as she too has Viking roots we are bound to be related. From the same stable as Walnut Block, Tindall is a single vineyard project of 22 hectares situated in Rapaura, north west of Blenheim in the heart of Marlborough. The shallow, well-drained soils are primarily made up of a stony alluvium with some silty loam and clay. Given Clyde and Nigel Sowman’s dedication to organic viticulture, the Tindall vineyard is farmed in the same manner. The wines are made under the guidance of the acclaimed winemaker, Dr. John Forrest are fermented in stainless steel tanks to emphasise the aromatics and purity of the Sauvignon Blanc grape.

Clyde and Nigel Sowman’s 17 Hectare vineyard is located on the Wairau Valley plains, an ancient dry river bed which has created a prime growing area for great wines, particularly intense aromatic Sauvignon Blanc.

Labour intensive vineyard methods produce consistent, exceptional fruit quality, and the use of traditional winemaking techniques and attention to preserving delicate flavours result in expressive and balanced wines.

Viticulture

Certified Organic by BioGro New Zealand, Tindall‘s vineyards are located in Marlborough’s premium Rapaura sub region, organic practices have allow the vineyard’s unique characters to be expressed due to less outside influences such as sprays and fertilizers. Depth of flavour and mouthfeel has improved as the vines become more self-sufficient and naturally balanced. The grapes are handpicked then gently whole bunched pressed. 30% is fermented in old barrel using wild yeasts giving the wine greater depth and complexity. 70% is fermented in stainless steel using cultured yeast to capture the lively fresh aromas and fruit purity. With the vineyard roots digging into alluvial deposits from the Wairau River. Tindall is a family-owned vineyard focusing on Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They have a commitment to remain small producers using only grapes from their certified organic vineyard.

Winemaking

Winemaking itself is in the hands of expert Dr John Forrest and the estate specialises in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The philosophy of the Sowmans is that by replicating the dense planting of better French vineyards and with low yields, then quality wines will result.
