Can Xanet

Can Xanet

Created in 2011 by José Antonio González, Can Xanet is a 2-hectare vineyard in Northern Majorca situated between the towns of Pollensa and Alcúdia in the foothills of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains. The soils are rich limestone and are alimented by water from the mountains, helping to prevent any severe hydric stress until well into summer. The vineyard’s proximity to the sea contributes to a special microclimate, as the thermal winds that appear in summer, cool the vines, avoiding excessive early ripening. Minimal intervention is the watchword in the vineyard. Four varieties are grown: Merlot, Syrah, Mantonegro and Gorgollassa. In addition, about 1 ton of Callet is bought from a nearby organic vineyard. Grapes are hand harvested, de-stemmed and then fermented in open top wooden casks. After malolactic fermentation, 80% of the wine is aged in new, one, two and three-year-old 225L French oak barrels.

“Wines and vineyards of the land of Mallorca”

Can Xanet is a 2-hectare vineyard in Northern Majorca situated between the towns of Pollensa and Alcúdia in the foothills of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains. The vineyard’s proximity to the sea ensures the benefits of a special microclimate, as the thermal wind that appears in summer cools the vines, avoiding excessively early ripening, producing wines that are elegant yet intense.

Viticulture

The Can Xanet farm has 2 hectares and is located in the north of Mallorca, between the municipalities of Pollensa and Alcudia, in the foothills of the Sierra de Tramuntana, with a gentle slope of 2.7%, on a calcareous soil and overlooking the Bay of Pollensa. The water collected by the mountain feeds the water table that passes under the vineyard, thus maintaining an excellent leaf surface and avoiding severe water stress until well into the summer. The situation of the farm, located very close to the sea, allows you to enjoy a special microclimate, since the thermal wind that originates in summer, refreshes the vineyard avoiding too accelerated maturations.

Winemaking

The vineyard is grown following reasonable practices to obtain quality grapes: vegetation cover between rows, short pruning, green pruning to stay with optimal production, phytosanitary treatments only when it is essential, using the least aggressive for the auxiliary fauna, thinning of the cluster, after the veraison and manual harvesting with selection of clusters. 4 varieties are grown: Merlot, Syrah, Mantonegro and Gorgollassa. In addition, about 1,000 kilos of Callet are acquired from an ecological farm. It is harvested in 15 kg boxes and they enter the chamber one day to lower the temperature of the grapes to 8o, then moving to the winery. Located in the town of Pollensa, where the grapes arrive, after spending a day on camera, it is destemed on top of the wooden tubs (4 troncoidals, 2 of 40 Hl and 2 of 25 Hl), so as not to have to crush the grapes. After the malolactic, it is taken to new French oak barrels of 225l (80%), one, two and three years and 500l. (20%) new of one, two and three years, where they rest for 12 months at controlled temperature and humidity. After the blending they go to deposits, where they will be about three months, after which they are bottled and rest for a minimum of 12 months before going to the market.
