La Guardiense

In a country that specialises in Co-Operatives, La Guardiense in Southern Italy’s Campania region are standout producers. With a thousand-strong membership, they also have chief scientist and oenologist Riccardo Cotarella in their ranks. Recently described by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate as “one of the most influential wine characters in the world”. While Italian whites can sometimes play 2nd fiddle to the regions reds, this wine gives you a reason to wonder why.

La Guardiense is one of the largest agricultural cooperatives in Italy, founded in 1960 by 33 far-sighted and courageous members, today it has about a thousand farmers who directly cultivate more than 1,500 hectares of vineyards.

The annual production is around 200,000 quintals of grapes and the cooperative can boast one of the most important sparkling wine plants in the South.

Janare aims at the promotion of native vines and the custody of the territory, through the enhancement of the immense wealth of local knowledge and distinctive practices, used as a fertilized humus on which to take root and cultivate innovation.

Winemaking

Working primarily with local indigenous grape varieties such as Greco, Falanghina, Fiano and Aglianico, La Guardiense are producing some excellent, very distinctive wines from volcanic slopes.
