                            [GrapeCharacteristics] => Young Pinot Noir can smell almost sweet, redolent with freshly crushed raspberries, cherries and redcurrants. When mature, the best wines develop a sensuous, silky mouth feel with the fruit flavours deepening and gamey "sous-bois" nuances emerging.

                    [Notes1] => Larry McKenna, commonly known as ‘McPinot’ started Escarpment in 1998 after cutting his teeth in both Europe and with Martinborough
Vineyards. After many years spent looking for that special site,
Larry and his wife, Sue, found they kept returning to Martinborough and specifically to Te Muna, 5 kilometres south east of
Martinborough village. There, they established 24 hectares of vineyard on the terraces of alluvial gravel that overlook the Huangarua River. The land is farmed organically, with certification due in the next 12 months. The vineyards are densely planted at 6,660 vines per hectare and so their approach includes shoot thinning, leaf plucking and bunch removal so as to create canopies that are less disease prone. The Edge series are fermented and aged in tank whilst the top wines are made in open top wooden fermenters wines with further ageing in French oak barriques, 40-50% of which are new.
                    [Notes2] =>
                    [Notes3] => Martinborough
                    [Notes4] => We visited the majority of wineries in martinborough in february 2012 and were bowled over by the intensity and excellence of the wines we have listed below. larry mckenna (left), director and winemaker, commonly known as ‘mcpinot’ is a legend with a solid reputation for getting the best out of pinot noir. the soil around escarpment is deep alluvial and the planting of vines is high density. high leaf to fruit ratio, combined with warm, dry summers, produce wines of exceptional power and style. three of the escarpment wines are listed amongst july 2012 decanter magazine’s top 10 new zealand pinot noirs.
