Báscula in Spanish means either a weighbridge for lorries or an old fashioned weight scales. Bruce Jack, founder of Flagstone, and today, owner of his new highly successful SA range, Bruce Jack Wines and hispanophile Ed Adams MW decided on a label design they went for the latter rather than the former to represent balance in their carefully crafted wines from all over Spain. Good wines are all about balance in the vineyard, the balance between various components in the wine and in the case of Báscula the balance between Old and New World.
Viticulture >
The Charge is produced by Bodegas Manzanos who control 700 hectares in Rioja as well as 50 hectares in D. O. Navarra. The grapes for this wine come from the Rioja Baja which has a dry and warm climate due to the Mediterranean influence. The soils are alluvial and clay-ferrous predominate. The vineyards are divided between the towns of Aldeanueva de Ebro, Alfaro, Azagra and San Adrián. The vines are trained on trellises helping to obtain grapes with good ripeness and balance. Due to the low rainfall of less than 300mm annually, drip irrigation has been installed in all the vineyards. Framing is conventional.
