This is a beautiful, restrained version of this wonderful individual grape variety. It is medium-bodied with dramatic aromas of pineapple, apricot and citrus fruit. It has wonderfully refreshing acidity and is great drunk on its own or maybe with a plate of cold meats. [Notes2] => From a 17 hectare estate that covers Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, St. Joseph and the Seyssuel in the Northern Rhône as well as vineyards on the Plan de Dieu and Visan in the Southern Rhône. The vineyards in the Northern Rhône are on very steep slopes, overlooking the Rhône River and with exposures that range from east through to south. The soils are a mixture of granite, gneiss and mica-schist. La Rosine Viognier is a 3 hectare vineyard that sits above the southern Côte-Rôtie hamlet of Tupin et Semons. The orientation is southerly and the soil is granite. The Viognier vines are planted at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare and are 25 years old. The vineyard work is done manually with minimum intervention and the grapes are harvested by hand. All this changed in 1997 with the return of Stéphane after five years’ study in Burgundy when he immediately set about increasing the domaine’s size with the purchase of parcels of vineyard and unplanted land in Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Seyssuel as well as in the Southern Rhône on the Plan de Dieu. His years in Burgundy have heavily influenced his vinification techniques. Stéphane likes to ferment all the parcels separately, now producing 12 different Côte-Rôtie alone. He de-stems the reds depending on the vineyard and the vintage and whilst still maturing most of the range in 228 litre barrels, uses significantly less new oak than in his youth. He looks for tension in his whites, occasionally partially blocking the malolactic fermentation when needed. [Notes2] => Northern Rhône [Notes3] => Rhône [Notes4] => Whereas many wine producers take a lifetime to make wines of note, at thirty eight years of age Stéphane Ogier is already a regional hero for the Northern Rhône Valley. Stéphane showed great promise from an early age, receiving 100 points from Robert Parker for his Côte-Rôtie ‘Belle Helene’ 1999 when he was only twenty two but it is in recent years that his talent has begun to mature into a confident, consistent brilliance. Stéphane studied in Beaune for five years and it is clear the influence that Burgundy has had on his style of wines. He has adopted a pragmatic approach to his vinification process, partially de-stemming for some cuvees, doing pre-fermentation cold soaks when required and mixing the length of the barrel ageing, particularly after the first year, depending on the vintage and the quality of the fruit. Extraction for his reds is achieved by gentle pump over and the occasional déléstage and skin contact is limited usually limited to the length of the alcoholic fermentation. Much of his success however is not due to the brilliance of his wines from the famous appellation of Côte-Rôtie but rather to his exploration and development of hitherto unfashionable and long ignored areas of Vin de Pays in the Northern Rhône. The huge following for his wines from the six hectare La Rosine vineyard situated between Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu has subsequently encouraged many other growers in the area to seek out similar types of land for planting. After recent purchases the domaine’s vineyard holdings now cover just over 12 ha. three and half in Côte-Rôtie, the six ha on the right bank of the Rhône and one and a half ha in the exciting, newly re-planted vineyard area of Seyssuel to the north of Vienne, on the eastern side of the Rhône. He also owns 1.2 ha of Condrieu in the southern part of the appellation and in 2010 ventured into the Southern Rhône with a 5 ha purchase at Travaillan on the Plan de Dieu.
