tradition. Picked quite early in the
season to preserve the delicate
fragrance of the cabernet grape.
Released at 7 years of age the wine
has a superb mature nose still
showing some blackcurrant aromas
but also cedary character
of mature cabernet.
The palate has cabernet austerity,
a fine dry palate and long lingering
dry tannins."


Shows strong primary fruit on the nose, with overtones of dusty new french oak aromas. The pallet is full flavoured with cassis and black current, a dry mounth feel with firm tannins through to the finish. The essential ingredients - fruiot, oak, acidity and tannins -0 are present in the right proportions.

Andrew was born on the Mitchell family vineyard. He studied Economics before the idea of returning and establishing the winery became a reality in 1975. Studying Wine Science at Riverina College (Charles Sturt University) in the late seventies helped crystallise Andrew`s winemaking philosophies.
 Andrew has always sought to make wines of intensity of varietal fruit flavours and definitive regional character; wines which are balanced and elegant. Andrew has travelled extensively and spent vintage in France in order to develop his understanding of the great wines of the world, and is now internationally famous for making wines with that combine the rare feat of drinkability in their youth with the capacity to age.

In 1977 she completed the Wine Production and Marketing Course at Roseworthy College (now University of Adelaide). With Andrew Mitchell she continues to develop the wine styles and marketing strategies. Jane focuses on the management and marketing of the business and continues to build the reputation of Mitchells as "One of the finest small wineries in Australia" (James Halliday, doyen of the Australian wine writers).

 Jane`s commitment to the wine industry has seen her take an active role in the Clare Winemakers Association, the group which promotes the area as a whole. In this role she was instrumental in initiating the Clare Gourmet Weekend as the first of its kind in Australia. This is a celebration of food and wine in the idyllic rustic surroundings of the Clare Valley.

 In recognition of her work in promoting the area and the wine industry generally, Jane was one of the first appointees of the South Australian Tourism Commission. For 12 years Jane was on the Australian Regional Winemakers Forum, Wine Federation of Australia Council and has recently finished a 6 year term with the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation Board.

 Her infectious enthusiasm will undoubtedly help establish South Australia as a `must go` destination in the minds of the people she meets as she travels Australia and the world promoting Mitchell wines. In 2001 the Australian Government formally acknowledged her long service to the Australian Wine Industry by conferring on her a Centenary Medal established to commemorate the Centenary of Federation of Australia and to honour people who have made a contribution to Australian society. More recently (2014) the Clare Valley Winemakers Association recognised Jane as a Clare Valley Legend and inducted her into the Clare Valley Winemakers Hall of Fame.
