Weingut A Christmann

An estate known for biodynamically produced elegant, ageworthy Rieslings. This small estate in the Pfalz is a jewel in the crown of German wine. Steffen Christmann is a respected and talented winemaker in the VDP, the Christmann Rieslings command a loyal following. Steffen’s daughter, Sophie came back from her studies in 2017 and focussed her energies on the estate’s Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) production, which has doubled under her watch. Their vineyard soils are unique to the area, they comprise heavy tertiary limestone, similar to Burgundy. The reflection of this in the wine is extraordinary. Chambolle, Volnay… tasted blind, these wines would trump many of their French counterparts.

Steffen has 25 years of experience and knows every step of the way in the winery. Sophie has been with us since 2018 and has brought ideas from all over the world.

They unite a common goal: namely traditionally produced wines that taste like Christmann and their origins in the Palatinate.

Viticulture

Their vineyards are very special places. Microclimate and soil, but also generations of winegrowers have shaped it. They are all classified VDP.ERSTE and VDP.GROSSE LAGEN. This is how unmistakable, great wines are created that tell of their homeland, the Mittelhaardt in the Palatinate.

Winemaking

Great wines can only grow in harmony with nature. Thanks to 20 years of biodynamics, they can say: the roots go deeper and the vineyards have reached their balance. They are very fortunate to be able to cultivate vines in one of the few landscapes in the world that gives us such fine, dry Riesling and Burgundy wines. Their goal is not to follow every trend and every new wine style short of breath, but to produce wines that stand in a long tradition of top wines and tell of their origin. They want to capture special taste experiences in bottles that only the Palatinate, Mittelhaardt and our vineyards around Gimmeldingen and Königsbach can produce.
