Fantini Farnese

Fantini Farnese

A team of talented young winemakers and agronomists. The refined “Fantini by Farnese” wines are made with the best selected grapes coming from the Farneto Valley and other important estates in Abruzzo; they complete their aging process in the beautiful cellars of the Caldora Castle, a historical building that the company wished to renovate in order to safeguard the cultural heritage and the viticultural tradition of the territory of Ortona.

Abruzzo/Puglia
ITALY

The Fantini group was founded in 1994 by Valentino Sciotti with the aim to produce top-quality wine from Abruzzo.

Success allowed the group to expand further south in Italy and also into Sicily.

Today the Fantini group includes Cantina Diomede, Gran Sasso, Vesevo, Vigneti del Salento, Vigneti del Vulture, Tufarello, Zabù and Cantina Atzei, among others. Alberto Antonini oversees production, ensuring that these wines offer great quality, varietal character and value. Their elegant and striking packaging makes them stand out on the shelf or table.

Viticulture

Fantini is their flagship winery, producing wines from vineyards based in the northern part of Abruzzo, where ripeness and freshness combine in the wines. The forward and accessible Sangiovese is a case in point. All the wines made from Montepulciano have the hallmark colour and intensity of this variety but with a balance and accessibility that is often lacking in wines from this region. The deeply coloured, intense and powerful ‘Edizione’ Cinque Autoctoni is, according to owner Valentino Sciotti, “a true taste of southern Italy”. A blend of five native grape varieties (Montepulciano, Primitivo, Sangiovese, Negroamaro and Malvasia Rossa) grown across Abruzzo and Puglia, it is full and powerful yet fresh and nicely defined.

Winemaking

Fantini is their flagship winery, producing wines from vineyards based in the northern part of Abruzzo, where ripeness and freshness combine in the wines. The forward and accessible Sangiovese is a case in point. All the wines made from Montepulciano have the hallmark colour and intensity of this variety but with a balance and accessibility that is often lacking in wines from this region. The grapes for this wine come from the small farms controlled by the Farnese group in the areas around Ortona, San Salvo and Pollutri. The vine age here is between 25 and 50 years. The vineyards have a south-eastern exposure and the soils are a mixture of clay and limestone. Once the fruit was received at the winery, it was gently crushed and destemmed, before undergoing maceration and fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 20 days at temperatures of 24-26°C. Finally, the wine was matured in barriques for 12 months prior to bottling.
