Château L’Esparrou

Château L’Esparrou

Located in the commune of Canet-en-Roussillon, close to the Pyrenees, this 60 ha estate is blessed by a wonderful natural environment. Sitting on a hill, the vineyard soil has a clay/limestone soil with a scattering of quartz stones. The land, swept by winds from the Mediterranean to the east and by the Tramontane arriving from Spain, combined with abundant sunshine, is perfect for producing varieties such as Carignan, Grenache and Syrah.

Roussillon
FRANCE

Domaine Château l’Esparrou was constructed between 1889 and 1891

by the Danish architect Petersen who, having fallen under the spell of the Roussillon, designed in the space of half a century most of the châteaux of this golden age for the vine.

Château l’Esparrou has long enjoyed a high reputation, with the famous Travellers Guide to France of 1813 already classed its wines amongst the best crus of  Roussillon.

Viticulture

On the banks of the Mediterranean, in the middle of ponds, rises an island with luxuriant vegetation. It is home to the elegant Château l’Esparrou and its 92-hectare vineyard. Distinguished for its muscats as one of the greatest in Roussillon, a haven of peace and exoticism.

Winemaking

Manual harvesting of the harvest. Pre-fermentation maceration and the vinification of the grape varieties is done separately. Ageing in vats 6 to 12 months in barrels.
