Bodega Gorka Izagirre

We’ve been looking for some decent Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zerratia to feature in our list (yes, you heard us right!). These delicate varieties are ancient vines from the Basque region. Grown in the province of Biscay, Gorka Izagirre have 40 ha of vines divided into small plots. The isolated spot deep in the hills of the Basque country gives these wines a unique and complex expression. Off the beaten track, but certainly worth the detour!

The true heroes of our winery are our local grapes, Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zerratia. These delicate varieties are descendents of Basque farm houses, grown in the Northeast Atlantic, they are cultivated on the steep and rolling slopes of the Basque Country.

Viticulture

Our Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zerratia grapes are grown in small vineyards in the province of Biscay. We meticulously care for forty hectares of vines, divided into small plots. The coastal air, steep hilly slopes, southeast morning sun, well-aerated plots green lush hillsides impart a unique freshness and character to our wines. Forty hectares divided into small plots integrated into the landscape of Biscay. Solidly formed slopes facing southeast, looking for the morning sun and fresh air. The complex geography of our lands requires delicate manual harvest in the month of October. Small tight bunches deliver a concentrated low yield per hectare allowing for optimum maturation creating structured wines of the highest quality.

Winemaking

The winery brings out the best in our grapes. At Gorka Izagirre we harvest only the highest quality grapes and use meticulous care in extracting their character so that quality shines through in every bottle. Equipped with the latest oenological technology, the winery allow us to extract the full potential of our grapes while preserving their identity and unique characteristics.
