[Notes2] => Planted on scree slopes between 1963 and 1966, the largest parcel of Gigondas is found at between 300-500 metres altitude at the foot of Les Dentelles de Montmirail with a north west orientation. A layer of clay is found beneath the scree, rich in alumino-silicates and and metallic trace elements as well as important reserves of water for the vines. Organic viticulture is practised although not certified with the only treatments being copper, sulphur and natural compost. The soils are lightly ploughed when necessary and de-budding and shoot thinning is also carried out to create a well aerated canopy. The denisty of planting is 4500 vines per hectare and harvesting is done by hand.

[Notes4] => Domaine la Bouïssiere was created between 1955 and 1960 by Antonin
Faravel. After his death in 1989 his two sons, Thierry and Gilles, took over
the domaine and continued to give their grapes to the co-operative until
1997. Like many ambitious vignerons however, they saw the future away
from the co-op and began working their vineyards in a manner that would
quickly enable them to emerge amongst the best producers of the appellation. Their father had been very astute in his vineyard
selection, choosing parcels that lie high in the rocky hills of the Dentelles de Montmirail at an altitude of 300m. Planted with
Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, the Faravel brothers work 13 hectares of vineyards, producing low yields of 30hl per hectare. The
patchwork nature of the vineyards at the top of the appellation helps with the overall complexity of the wines as the orientation of
each parcel, its altitude and soil structure can be significantly different. The slow maturation of the grapes here, as well as the cooler
nights, results in grapes that whilst ripe also offer plenty of fresh acidity. The impact of the altitude should not be underestimated in
Gigondas, nor sometimes the problems it can cause, as harvest often takes place at least two weeks later than neighbouring
Vacqueyras. One of the problems for the consumer in Gigondas is knowing where each domaine’s vineyards lie and we have always
had a distinct preference for those from the higher reaches as the lower part often produces wines of greater rusticity.
Whilst Gilles is mainly in the vineyards, Thierry is often found in the cellar. Thierry has a love of freshness and elegance in wines,
something that seems to have unsurprisingly increased since his marriage to German-born Corinna Kruse, owner of the excellent La
Martinelle estate in the Ventoux. As a result there has been a noticeable shift in Thierry’s wines in the last few vintages with a move
towards a finer, more elegant expression of grapes.
[Notes5] => He still uses whole bunches and continues to ferment in cement tanks but there
appears to be much less extraction. Ageing takes place in small barrels but for the basic Gigondas cuvée none of it is new. Made from
65% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre this wine has everything that lovers of the Southern Rhône look for. power but
finesse, fruit allied with spice and minerality. It is also worth looking out for the domaine’s Vin de France, ‘Les Amis de la
Bouissière’, a rich, fruity blend of Merlot, Syrah and Grenache that delivers far more than many wines from within the appellation

About this product +

Producer >

Created between 1955 and 1960 by Antonin Faravel, this 18 hectare estate is now run by his two sons, Thierry and Gilles. The domaine’s organically run vineyards lie primarily in the high, rocky hills of Les Dentelles de Montmirail with many of the vines now over fifty years old. The soils are poor, made up of thin sandy clay over limestone. The altitude and different orientations aid in a slow maturation of the grapes, with the cooler nights giving plenty of acidity. Thierry, who makes the wines, prefers to ferment whole bunch where possible, believing that the stems help bring more freshness to the wines. Maturation is done in barrel and foudres with an increasing percentage of the latter.

Viticulture >

Planted on scree slopes between 1963 and 1966, the largest parcel of Gigondas is found at between 300-500 metres altitude at the foot of Les Dentelles de Montmirail with a north west orientation.
