[Notes1] => A light medium bodied wine from
grapes grown in the hills to the west of
Montpellier. Tank fermented, it has
lovely honeyed fruit and plenty of
freshness. Unoaked, so pure
Chardonnay.
[Notes2] => The wines of Simone Joseph are inspired by the beauty and diversity of the Languedoc. Such is the contrasting landscape, on occasion, non-native and non-typical grapes of the region can flourish. The hilly Cevennes region to the north and the Mediterranaen to the south provide great terroirs to produce rounded and elegant wines.

[Notes4] => Simone Joseph is Simon & Emma Tyrrell’s own micro-negoçiant
business focusing on wines from the Rhône Valley. With over twenty
years’ experience working in the region they have developed a strong
understanding of the complex, patchwork nature of the many appellations of the Rhône region.
Working with partners within the region and in selecting either grapes or grape must from carefully selected vineyard sites in the
Rhône Valley or working with finished wines, they have put together a range of wines that display all the elements that make the two
parts of the region so famous. Above all, they believe that Simone Joseph wines need to reflect elegance, freshness, balance, and
individuality – attributes that in days gone by made the Rhône so highly prized, but that may have become blurred, in more recent
times, by a trend for concentration and power.
There are currently three wines in the range, a Côtes du Rhône, a dry, red Beaumes de Venise and a Chardonnay. Whilst the
Chardonnay may seem like an odd choice for a Rhône wine, it is the result of a careful exploration of the most westerly part of the
valley where the Cévennes hills rise. Such is the diversity of the Rhône that even this more northerly grape is capable of producing
wines of remarkable freshness here. Grown on poor gravelly soils and then fermented in stainless steel and with the malolactic
fermentation blocked, this wine, tasted blind, can easily pass for one made several hundred kilometres to the north.
The Côtes du Rhône is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault and is sourced from the commune of Fournès. This is an area of
Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages but amazingly not a Villages with commune as it easily rivals many of the best terroirs of
the left bank. After crushing and de-stemming, the grapes were co-fermented in cement tanks.
[Notes5] => The temperature at the beginning of
the alcoholic fermentation was kept at around 18°C in order to extract elegant fruit characteristics and aromas and was kept below
24°C for most of the fermentation, only being allowed to rise at the end. Extraction was done by pump overs and déléstage.
Malolactic fermentation and further ageing also took place in tank.
The Beaumes de Venise comes from probably the most underrated appellation in the Southern Rhône. The complex soil make up
along with the altitude and varied orientation of the vineyards produces some of the most individually flavoured grapes of the region.
The Beaumes is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah fermented only in tank. It is similar in body to a Gigondas from the higher
part of the appellation but with more of the fruity, straightforwardness of a Ventoux. Just not to be confused with a Muscat de
Beaumes de Venise! This is a dry red wine, not a sweet one.
