Terroir Sonoro

Terroir Sonoro

A winery born from the study of music. Juan José Ledesma worked for years in the vineyards, researching grapevine genetics for the Chilean government. Whilst on his travels he discovered a Malbec vineyard that was over 100 years old. His request for backing to restore this vineyard was declined, so he tried a different angle, the research of the effect of music on wine. Each barrel is plugged with a different tune, playing inside, turning the lees, shaping the wine.Following his discovery of the ancient Malbec vines, Juan José expanded the business to work with other dry grown, ancient ancestral vines grown in Itata and Biobio. As their name suggests, Terroir Sonoro is all about ‘terroir and songs’.

Itata Valley
CHILE

Terroir sonoro is an innovation project of Viñas Ineditas in the Biobio region, Chile.

It is a differentiation, aging and marketing strategy  for wines from the Biobio region, Chile.

Juan José Ledesma is a winemaker and amateur musician. With more than 17 years in the Itata and Bio Bio Valleys, he deeply appreciates the heritage value of southern viticulture, both in its genetic and intangible wealth.

Viticulture

The wines of Terroir Sonoro are grown on the Santa Ximena Farm, located at the southern end of the Itata Valley, owned and managed by Juan’s cousin, Alvaro Ledesma. The Cinsault vine rows traverse the top of the hill and the Pais grapes grow down the slop of the hill.

Winemaking

The rescue of ancient varieties, such as Malbec from San Rosendo and Cinsault from Itata, has been a constant concern in recent years. In the same way, innovation and the search for creative solutions to the technical and commercial problems of southern viticulture have been the path that has led to the Terroir Sonoro project. Juan Jose Ledesma composes, plays and records a special soundtrack for some of the wines that he ages in barrel. Each of these wines receives direct vibrations from the music by placing speakers in the barrels. The music for each barrel plays without stop throughout its aging. Although you can describe his music as rock/jazz, he uses different pieces for each cuvee based on the style of the wine itself.
