"A deep bright inky crimson red, the nose shows fragrant, ripe berry flavours lifted by dusty exotic spicy notes. There is generous complex fruit flavour on the front palate, leading seamlessly through to a very dry firm tannin finish.             [Notes2] => Sited 120 kilometres north of Adelaide the estate covers 80 hectares of vineyard. The grapes come from four main vineyard sites in the Clare Valley where the altitude ranges from 300-450 metres with drops in temperature from 40°C during the day to 1°C at night being common during the main ripening months.             [WineMakingNotes] => Our Shiraz has a component of whole bunch fermentation which gives a wonderful lifted perfume to the wine and helps with the tannin structure. The Shiraz is estate bottled after 18 months in French oak barrels

A late start to the growing season due to cool and wet weather, the wettest year since 2000 with 1000mm of rain. This led to a later start to vintage. The vines were in great condition with strong canopies and fruit was of a high quality across the board.

                    [Notes2] =>  In 1949 the Mitchell Family moved to Clare, the property was a dairy, and orchard, and lucky enough a small patch of vineyard. This is truly a family operation, with two generations growing up and working on the property and the third has just begun.
Andrew was born on the Mitchell family vineyard. He studied Economics before the idea of returning and establishing the winery became a reality in 1975. Studying Wine Science at Riverina College (Charles Sturt University) in the late seventies helped crystallise Andrew`s winemaking philosophies.
 Andrew has always sought to make wines of intensity of varietal fruit flavours and definitive regional character; wines which are balanced and elegant. Andrew has travelled extensively and spent vintage in France in order to develop his understanding of the great wines of the world, and is now internationally famous for making wines with that combine the rare feat of drinkability in their youth with the capacity to age.

                    [Notes3] =>   Jane came to the industry from a nursing background. In 1977 she completed the Wine Production and Marketing Course at Roseworthy College (now University of Adelaide). With Andrew Mitchell she continues to develop the wine styles and marketing strategies. Jane focuses on the management and marketing of the business and continues to build the reputation of Mitchells as "One of the finest small wineries in Australia" (James Halliday, doyen of the Australian wine writers).

 Jane`s commitment to the wine industry has seen her take an active role in the Clare Winemakers Association, the group which promotes the area as a whole. In this role she was instrumental in initiating the Clare Gourmet Weekend as the first of its kind in Australia. This is a celebration of food and wine in the idyllic rustic surroundings of the Clare Valley.

 In recognition of her work in promoting the area and the wine industry generally, Jane was one of the first appointees of the South Australian Tourism Commission. For 12 years Jane was on the Australian Regional Winemakers Forum, Wine Federation of Australia Council and has recently finished a 6 year term with the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation Board.

 Her infectious enthusiasm will undoubtedly help establish South Australia as a `must go` destination in the minds of the people she meets as she travels Australia and the world promoting Mitchell wines. In 2001 the Australian Government formally acknowledged her long service to the Australian Wine Industry by conferring on her a Centenary Medal established to commemorate the Centenary of Federation of Australia and to honour people who have made a contribution to Australian society. More recently (2014) the Clare Valley Winemakers Association recognised Jane as a Clare Valley Legend and inducted her into the Clare Valley Winemakers Hall of Fame. 
                    [Notes4] => Angus has worked in all facets of the wines industry. He has gained vast experience as a cellar hand through working in wineries and vineyards in the Hunter Valley in NSW, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley in SA as well as completing a vintage in the Alsace region of France in 2004. On returning to the family business he took on a role in Sales and Marketing looking after the domestic market. Meanwhile Angus developed an appetite for travel so he spent a year working for Adnams Wine Stores in the UK. On returning home from the UK he continued his Sales and Marketing role before finding his place in the vineyard. He now managers Mitchells 80 hectares of vineyards incorporating the sustainable farming beliefs laid out before him by his grandfather Peter and father Andrew Mitchell.

Producer >

Run by Andrew and Jane Mitchell and their son Angus, this winery has gone from strength to strength since its inauguration in 1975. Sited 120 kilometres north of Adelaide and standing at 80 ha of sustainably farmed vineyard, the estate is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading Riesling producers as well as being highly respected for their Semillon and intensely flavoured, well structured, long lived reds. Their grapes come from four main vineyard sites in the Clare Valley where the altitude ranges from 300-450 metres which allows the fruit to ripen more slowly and evenly with drops from 40˚C during the day to 1˚C at night being common during the main ripening months. Soils are primarily loam over limestone. No artificial herbicides or pesticides are used in the vineyards.

Our Shiraz has a component of whole bunch fermentation which gives a wonderful lifted perfume to the wine and helps with the tannin structure. The Shiraz is estate bottled after 18 months in French oak barrels A late start to the growing season due to cool and wet weather, the wettest year since 2000 with 1000mm of rain. This led to a later start to vintage. The vines were in great condition with strong canopies and fruit was of a high quality across the board.
