Losada, Bierzo DO, Losada Vinos De Finca

Losada
Product Code: LS04ZZRC

Tasting Notes

What is fascinating about such a representative Bierzo is how it reflects the Mencía grape: Toast, dark chocolate and liquorice flavors frame the black cherry and plum fruit in this expressive red, accented by mountain herb and mineral notes, note in addition to Bierzo`s remarkable conflation of fruit, flowers, and herbs. Integrated tannins and acidity.

[Notes2] => The estate`s vineyards are planted primarily on clay soils, on the outskirts of the village of Pieros, on the St James pilgrimage route, midway between Cacabelos and Villafranca del Bierzo. The small plots of the Mencía variety are planted in valleys protected to the north by the Montes de León and to the south by the Cordillera de los Aquilianos. With their low pH, the soils are well suited and are made up of two types: slate and sandstone on the one hand and rich clay on the other. The vines are planted at an altitude of between 400 and 800m.The continental climate provides over 2,000 hours of sunshine per year with an average rainfall of 750mm. The vineyards are small bush-vine plots and require only minimum intervention. The soils are ploughed and in some area a grass cover-crop is seeded in order to combat erosion, reduce vine vigour and maintain soil structure. Losada comes from Mencía grapes sourced from old vines on gentle slopes close to the winery where richer, clay soils predominate. Harvesting is done by hand.

[GrapeCharacteristics] => Mencia is a red-wine grape native to the northwest of Spain. It is most commonly associated with the red wines of Bierzo, which were once light and astringent but, since the discovery of low-yielding vines planted on poor soils high on the hills, have become more intense and concentrated, attracting the attention of the wine-drinking world. Mencia wines tend to exhibit earthy, vegetal characters with berry nuances and stony minerality.

Our estates lie on gentle clay slopes planted with vines that have largely been forgotten until recently but which have always reminded us of the vineyards of best known areas for great classic wines...

 Estate Wines

We only produce estate wines, sourced from vineyards which we have admired for some time and have gradually got to know better and better. We pick and vinify the fruit on a plot by plot basis with the aim of producing elegant, perfumed, complex wines. Respect for nature is our watchword in all our work.

About this product +

Producer >

Based on the outskirts of Villafranca del Bierzo, Losada was started in 2005 with the objective of seeking out parcels of Mencía vines, planted on clay soils, a terroir which had been relatively overlooked in the past. With plots around the villages of Pieros and Valtuille de Abajo, the vines are bush trained and farmed with minimum intervention. The belief of head winemaker, Amancio Fernandez, is that the clay soils of these two sub regions produce Mencía grapes that have a finer structure than those planted on slate. The grapes are hand harvested, crushed and de-stemmed and then fermented using indigenous yeasts and extraction is achieved by daily pump overs. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel and latterly, Losada have also added egg-shaped cement tanks.

Viticulture >

The estate`s vineyards are planted primarily on clay soils, on the outskirts of the village of Pieros, on the St James pilgrimage route, midway between Cacabelos and Villafranca del Bierzo.

Winemaking >

Plot by plot vinification. Hand-picked grapes rapidly transferred to harvest reception in 20 kg. crates. Sorting table. De-stemming and light crushing. Alcoholic fermentation using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats with periodic pump-overs. Vinification: Traditional (influenced by French winemaking methods). Pre-fermentation cold maceration. Malolactic: In barrel. Ageing: 12 months in second and third use French oak.
