[Notes1] => In the land of Barolo , in Serralunga d`Alba , under the shadow of the castle, there are some of the most important vineyards in the world . There are those of the Porro family - Lazairasco, Santa Caterina and `l Pari - in the cru Lazzarito, in an enviable position. Exposed to the south-west and south-east, the vineyards take the best sun in the Langa and produce Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera.

Many times, however, a place kissed by good fortune and splendid vineyards are not enough to make quality wine. We must also put a strong commitment , meticulous work between the rows , a loving care of each vine and its soil . All this proves that the quality that we find in the bottle comes, for the most part, already in the middle of the vineyards, before continuing its course in the cellar.

A solid family history behind him, a lot of work, a lot of passion, a fine expertise, acquired by learning, from an early age, between rows and barrels. all this marked the way of Guido Porro from a young age, as well as that of his father Giovanni, of his grandfather Guido and his grandfather`s father.

A visit to the winery , newly renovated and enlarged, built on top of its vineyards and from which you can enjoy a panorama that embraces winey hills and snow-capped mountains, is a real pleasure. Let yourself be told the story enclosed in that glass, feel its perfumes, taste without haste. You will return.
[Notes2] => There are no certain sources about the origin of the name, which some would like to trace back to the presence of a lazaretto in remote times. The denomination Lazzarito is however already found in the land register of 1610. The imposing farmhouse that dominates the vineyards was owned by the Opera Pia Barolo, as shown by the inventory drawn up on behalf of this institution in 1859.

The cru Lazzarito is a large vineyard of about 20 Piedmontese days (less than 8 hectares). The altitude varies between 350 and 400 meters. The terrain has characteristics similar to the other areas of the hill, perhaps it is slightly more loose; reddish sandy grains can be observed.

Seen from the I Vei hamlet, the Lazzarito looks like a beautiful basin, a natural continuation of the Delizia vineyard of the Parafacla cru, with exposures ranging from full south to west, passing through the south-west. It should be noted that the part facing west is well regarded by all, since the basin that forms the hill is very well sheltered from the wind.

The calcareous soil does not allow abundant grape production but the quality of these is unquestionable. Lazzarito has always been considered a first-class cru capable of offering Baroli of great value, suitable for long storage.
[Notes3] => The lower part of the Lazzarito, separated from it by a country road that starts from the I Vei village, is traditionally known by the name of Lazzariasco.

This small vineyard (less than 2 hectares), located at an altitude between 300 and 350 meters and with an area similar to that of the Lazzarito, in turn has high quality characteristics, thanks to a happy south / south-east exposure and a very favorable microclimate for the cultivation of Nebbiolo. Sheltered from the winds, protected by the high front of the hill, in the middle of a valley where the heat is suffocating in summer, this cru concentrates in itself the characteristics of a good Nebbiolo vineyard.

Moreover, the numerous testimonies collected among the old winemakers in the area agree in stating that the Lazzariasco has always made excellent Barolo and that that small plot has always been considered excellent.
[Notes4] => A small area located beyond the Lazzarito in the direction of the inhabited center of Serralunga, is called Santa Caterina. Only a part of this vineyard, which takes its name from the homonymous farmhouse, is suited to Nebbiolo and it is the one facing south-west.

The vineyards descend from the provincial road on fairly cool ground which therefore tends to be richer than in the sunnier areas.

The advantage of a vineyard of this kind is that it can provide excellent grapes even in particularly dry years. The small area, just 5 days in Piedmont (less than 2 hectares), is located between 390 and 340 meters above sea level.

About this product +

Producer >

Having worked on the family estate all his life, his 3 menziones situated around the winery – Lazairasco, Santa Caterina and I Pari are exposed south-east and south-west taking full advantage of the sunshine and creating styles made in the traditional way that demonstrate the weight and concentration that Serralunga is famous for. This is not to say the wines are giants; Guido manages to pursue and extract a fragrance and precision in his wines that is quite extraordinary.
